How did I get involved with these "little wonders?"

I had been thinking about volunteering somewhere but I didn't know where. Then I got an email about a new mentoring program at Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and they needed mentors for refugee children from Africa.

A little about BBBS...

"The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth.

National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

  • More confident in their schoolwork performance
  • Able to get along better with their families
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drug
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school."

I decided that this would be a a great program to get invovled in and here I am...1 year later! I love being the "big sister" of Rita Sayou! I decided to make this little blog so that Rita and her family can see pictures from our outings and to make more people aware of this amazing program. I've learned so much about Rita's culture and have been able to watch her learn the everyday values and conventions here in the United States.
